A Tale of Two Mamas

Trying to keep someone IN timeout

Archive for Travel

Howdy partner.

That’s right folks, we’re in Houston!

Right when we stepped off the plane I knew we were in a different place. Perhaps it’s the man that held the door open for us and said “surely, mam” or the other guy who helped us put our bags in the airport shuttle.

There’s definitely something to be said for southern hospitality!

We’re having a great time in Houston and it’s been fun to see my parents with both kids. My mother hasn’t put the baby down for a minute and Graem really has a great connection with my dad.

Emmy has taken a turn for the better. Friday we had the appointment with the Lactation Consultant and we talked about getting a deeper latch, holding my big boob differently, and also her overall weight gain. At the beginning of the appointment she was 7lbs 1oz. After a good feeding she was back up to birth weight at 7lbs 3oz.

I agreed to change up the latch a little bit and try hard to pinch my boob to make it smaller for little girl. The lactation consultant basically said that the big mama to little baby ratio was somewhat harder than medium mama and medium baby. Therefore, the trick is that I’ve got to fatten the kid up and make my boob into a beautiful little muffin.

We are also going to go for a weigh in here in Houston tomorrow. I hope that everything is on track like I think it is and she’s gained at least a little bit.

Thanks to everyone for the comments and information. I’m so glad that I’ve kept trucking through this without doping my kid up on formula. (No offense to those that use formula!)

Gotta love breast feeding in Houston. I must say I haven’t had too many bad looks but yesterday when we went to eat at one of the Mexican restaurants Margot saw a lady in the bathroom covered with blankets nursing her baby.

Ugh…I will not resort to making my kid eat in the bathroom.

If the kid is hungry and needs boob … she gets boob.

In desperate need of a getaway!

Not only is the weather outside hideous and we’re buried in a few inches of snow but lately things have been pretty hectic. This time last year we were preparing to go to Cancun, Mexico for our family vacation and this year we’re washing baby clothes in preparation for little Emerson!

We were discussing the other day how we love the fact that we’ve already taken Graem to two countries and she’s only three years old. We hope that we can keep the traveling up and do the same when the new baby gets here.

One way would be to look at real estate in another country and purchase a nice getaway home! I’ve always wanted to go to Italy and I’ve heard that the real estate there is a real goldmine if you get the right parcel.

The best place to check out Mediterranean property is to go to MedHead.com. The website is easy to use and the best thing about it is — it’s translated in seven different languages! That’s absolutely unheard of these days and they are really above the curve on that one!

We love San Francisco!

We have been to San Fran twice so far and each time we have had a wonderful time full of great food and beautiful sites.

About nine years ago (pre-child) we thought we wanted to move to San Francisco so we went there, interviewed, looked for housing, and even got a few job offers. After a few weeks and the dot com crash Margot’s job was resended and we decided that it might be best to say put in littletown, New York.

There are so many things to do in San Francisco! In fact, even in our most recent visit I feel like we just touched on some of the sites and with a toddler and pregnant lady we weren’t able to venture out too much. Plus, Margot was at her work conference throughout the day and evenings.

Next time we go to the west coast I really want to go to the San Diego zoo! It’s notorious for being one of the best zoos in the world and Graem would love to look at all of the animals.

I can’t wait to take a family vacation with both kids! I can only imagine how chaotic and fun it’s going to be!

If you’re looking for family vacation ideas you might want to check out TrustedTours.com. The website gives great information about popular cities and tourist destinations. Plus, it just makes sense to simply your life when you have kids and let someone else make your travel arrangements and plans!

Leaving on a jetplane?

I’m not sure we’re going to get around to much traveling with the baby on the way. We have talked about doing some traveling after he/she makes their appearance.

We’ve talked about going to Cape Cod, Phillippines, and to Rohobath Beach to visit friends.

However, I just came across a great website that helps with scheduling a flight to Australia!

Of course, the hardest part for us traveling as a family is the logisitics. Traveling with a newborn probably won’t be the easiest task and we’re going to need all of the help we can get!

DialAFlight.com makes scheduling flights a piece of cake! Who doesn’t need that type of help?

Bad baby!

This morning I dropped Grammy off and had to run some errands. Then I had an 11:30am appointment to get the Nuchal Screening done again! (Petri-dish baby was 1mm too small last week).

So, Margot drives up, gets out of her car and said “I think I just had a bad driving moment.” Sure enough, she jumped one of the curbs at her work, and took a big hunk out of her tire! So, we start calling to see if anyone has this specific Yokohama in town.

Mind you, we are trying to get out of town tomorrow and head to New York City. We would switch to taking my car but the stupid break light keeps coming on and I’m in desperate need of an oil change.

So we walk into the OBGYN’s office and Margot is still on the phone and has to get off the phone when they call us. They call my name pretty quickly and we go in to the ultrasound room. The not-so-friendly ultrasound lady puts jelly on belly and finds baby immediately. The heartbeat is 167 (as it usually is) and he/she is sleeping, but in the wrong position to get the scan. They need a profile picture of the baby to test the folds in the neck.

The lady starts to push on my belly and it feels like she’s punching me! At one point the baby moves his arm up as if to say “please leave me the hell alone.” After all of that poking I think anything/one should be awake! Not this kid. He remained sleeping!

So she said that we should go to lunch, come back in an hour and we’d try it again.

We left to go to Kyushu. Margot had sushi and I had hibachi. It was delicious as usual. The whole time we’re there we’re calling around for this specific tire and of course noone has it. So we decide to call around and get my Honda into the shop to have the brake light looked at and the oil change done.

After we drop my car off at the mechanics we find out that Margot’s tire is on backorder at Yokohama and they aren’t shipping anymore. Just great.

So, we go back to the midwives for our THIRD nuchal ultrasound. This time baby is moving around, hitting his face, sucking his hand, and dry humping the sky. However, he just won’t get in the position that he’s suppose to get in for this scan. It’s like he’s doing it out of spite! At one point he got in the spot … just to move 1 second later!

The ultrasound lady kept jiggling my belly to get him to keep moving…but he would just move the opposite direction!

She decided to stop with the scanning and told us we could try it one more time…next week!!

I went ahead and got the prenatal bloodwork done. They test for all of the STD’s, cystic fibrosis, anemia, and some other goodies.

Right now, I’m hanging out at Margot’s work doing this blog entry and at 3:30pm I have a chiro appointment and then I’m off to drop off Margot’s car and wait. It looks like they have an extra tire they can put on the car so that we can drive it to New York and back. They have placed the order for the new Yokohama and it should be in by Monday.

Despite having to dish out a good $200 or so for car repairs, our furnace breaking down last week, and Margot chipping her tooth….it really puts everything into prospective…and we are just so happy to see that our baby is healthy, thriving, and misbehaving already!
