Starting a business?

A few years back when I decided to do some consulting on the side I figured word of mouth would be my best advertiser but in the art of doing business I still needed to print out some materials, become incorporated, and set up a small business from an accounting aspect.

All together I think I made the investment of about $500 to become incorporated and have print collateral including business cards, envelopes, and brochures.

Many people who decide to start their own business look towards Commercial Finance as an option. It’s hard getting funding in the United States if you’ve never owned a business and don’t have many assets.

That’s why I was happy to hear about Earch.co.uk. They offer financing of all types and also have a great website with tons of educational information.

Good ole’ corporate America.

I can’t believe at one point I was climbing the corporate ladder, the youngest director in the company, and now I’m at home and raising a beautiful daughter, with another bun in the oven.

Wow. How times have changed!

I remember every spring I’d have to do corporate performance management with all of my employees. Typically, that meant that I’d give employees self evaluations and then I’d also do an evaluation of the employee. Most of the time the two were pretty similiar and most people would admit their weaknesses on paper. However, sometimes you’d get a horrible employee that needed tons of improvement - and they would return their assessment with perfect marks.

Typically, those employees weren’t very long and also didn’t receive much of an annual raise!

School money?

One of our best friend’s sister’s is a student at the local community college.   In the past she’s gone to art school and does a great job with design and graphic design in particular.

I really think she should enter the Christmas Cards Scholarship Contest.     It’s eligible to kids going to college or planning on going to college.   The whole idea is that they design a Christmas card and the one that wins gets $10,000 to go towards their college education.

This could really do wonders for our friend and her family!    Especially since she’s looking to move to Cornell in the spring.

I know each year we are always impressed at the companies that send ups corporate Christmas cards.   It lets us know that they are more than just a corporation and that at least they take the time and spend the money to spread a little holiday cheer!

GalleryCollection.com offers a great selection of professional and personal business Christmas cards.   Whether you own a small business or larger business - it’s important to keep in front of the public eye.

What better way to have “top of mind awareness” and also spread the holiday cheer than from a great Christmas card!

The marketing scoop.

Since my expertise in the business world has dealt much with marketing and sales I’m always interested to find great blogs and information about current marketing tips and trends.

One of the newest websites to hit the world wide web is iCrossing’s Great Finds!    The website is easy to follow and you can actually get an idea of the marketing trends from future and past years.

Right now they are focusing on the Dallas Cowboys and how they are trying to buy an online site.   However, they keep going back and forth with the company selling it!    It looks like at one point they might have come up with a good bid and it was about to be accepted and now the deal has fallen through.

I’m sure this type of thing happens all of the time.   However, a website means everything in today’s world.   If you have a horrible website or URL for your organization or business more than likely you won’t get the traffic that you want or need to promote your business.

All in all, they are talking about pennies and more than likely they probably should have offered more because with the Dallas Cowboys having a chance at the superbowl this year they probably could have gotten some good advertisers to sponsor the website and make up the cost lost on spending over their initial budget.

Maybe they should just put me in charge of the negotiations.   God knows, I’m a no B.S. type of person and just want to ge the job done!

Business cents.

When I started my business I did the not so smart thing of using my cell phone as my business contact phone.   Little did I realize that there would be times when my phone battery would be dead or the phone would be out of commission and I would receive calls.

I also didn’t realize how much families in need talk and how many minutes would be used with potential clients!    I think a Business voIP would make a lot of sense for my current situation.      In fact, Packet8 offers a VOIP that you can hook up directly to your broadband service and have full telephone access.

Some of the best features of Packet8 Virtual Office is that it’s easy to install, there’s no fancy hardware, and you just can’t beat the price!

Packet8.net offers an easy to use website where you can either chat live with the sales staff or even call the 1-888 number.   The website also gives information for small business and call centers and includes information about offers, installation, and equipment.

If you own a small to medium business take it from me and don’t use your cell or home phone!    Instead, do what makes business sense and saves you money.    Go the route that so many smart companies are turning to - Business voIP!
