A Tale of Two Mamas
Trying to keep someone IN timeout

We just got back from Emmy’s two week appointment and I’m a bit disappointed. It seems like she’s gotten so much bigger. She really seems longer and her head seems to have spread out a lot too.
Well, the scale didn’t depict that.
Emmy came out weighing 7lbs 3oz. Today they wanted her to be at her birthweight and she was only 7lbs. Now, I know 3 oz isn’t too much weight and could possibly be a good poop and a full belly but I really feel like I’ve let her down and I’m not doing a good job with the nursing.
Her head had gotten bigger according to the measurements and she is now measuring longer too. So I have no idea how she couldn’t have gained weight.
The pediatrician didn’t seem bothered by it and said that it was close enough. However, I want to make sure that this isn’t a trend and we get things “fixed” ASAP. So, I went ahead and made another appointment Friday for the lactation consultant.
I really want nursing to work and if she’s not getting what she needs to grow — I want to “make it better” and do everything I can to have a healthy and happy baby.

Emmy could also just be inclined to a skinny child. My son was on the low end of the weight charts until he hit 4. His first year he hovered around the 5 to 10% and we had to go in for weekly weigh ins. He eventually grew out of it and floated up to the 25% from ages 1 to 3. Then around 4 he moved into the 50%.
Going to the consultant is still a good thing to do but I just wanted to share. I won’t say “don’t panic” because if you’re like me, you already are. That’s parenting for you.
It must be frustrating, but for what it’s worth, from a childless-stranger, I think you are doing such an admirable job. You have such a lovely family. I love your blog. All the joy in the world to you all. ox
My precious baby girl, you have not failed little Emmy nor with as much love and devotion as you have for her will you ever fail or dissapoint her! Evidently she is getting enough nutrition or she would be crying out of hunger continuosly. You and Margot are doing the loving and responsible thing by talking with the lactation nurse Friday! She may always be a little tiny girl!
Grammy and Emmy are so very blessed to have you and Margot for their Mothers!!!
daddy and I are so blessed to have you and Margot for our daughters!!!
Grandmai wll fatten that little one up with some chicken-n-dumplings in a few days!!!
i agree with everything said here. i came by simply to say that you’re doing a fabulous job, or else she wouldn’t have gained back what she has. no baby is ever going to match the time schedule exactly. she is a healthy, perfect little girl, and you are giving her what she needs.
…that said, please feel free to post any advice you get from the lactation consultant!
