Need not knot a not-neat knot

I remember learning this in high school, when we learned to rappell and rock climb.  This web site has the best knot illustrations for a number of knots, including the Figure 8 knot often used in climbing.  While I haven’t been climbing in oh, 13+ years, recent fishing endeavors (okay, so last year isn’t really recent) have required me to learn some new knots.  Of course, my mind being what it is, I can’t remember a single one. Netknots.com has them all.

Is it wrong to be mad at a sandwich?

So I was driving back from Oswego today, and trying to cram down lunch to save time. I opened up the sub half that Shawna gave me from her lunch yesterday–I should have known it would be a bad idea when I saw the oozing grease leaking through the wrapper last night.  This morning I just wrapped it in a sandwich bag and figured it would be okay.  Letting it sit on the seat of my car for 5 hours today did not add to its palatability.

I attempted to unwrap it as I was pulling out of the gas station, and found that most of the filling had oozed to the cut end, and miscellaneous toppings were trying to escape the accursed sandwich.  I had to pull over at a driveway about a quarter of a mile later because I was having morbid thoughts of, “What happens if I get into an accident because of this sandwich?”

I found that I had no napkins in my car, so while swearing, I attempted to rearrange the oozing chicken salad, tomatoes, olives, pickles, onions, hot peppers, and god knows what else into something that resembled a sub.  I couldn’t even touch the wrapper without soiling myself, and smears of chicken salad ended up all over the steering wheel.  I figured I had done as well as I could, so I pulled out of the driveway with the hellbound sandwich in my left hand.  I couldn’t decide which needed more dexterity–driving or maneuvering the sandwich–so I switched hand.  In the meantime, olives and pickles fell onto my seat, leaving telltale grease stains on the fabric.

Finally, after three or four bites, I gave up.  Then I found that I had rearranged the sub wrapping in such a way that I couldn’t even rewrap the sandwich and contain the mess.  I dug around the back seat–driving 65 on a 2-lane road, btw–and found a roll of paper towels.  I took one piece and wrapped up the leaking end of the sub as best I could, and laid it gingerly on the floor on the passenger side.  I made mental note not to make any abrupt evasive maneuvers while driving, lest I splatter the remainder of the cursed sandwich on the car.

Stupid sandwich.

Debt, debt, debt

I just found this blog about a couple paying off their debt. I love reading about others’ personal finances, hence all the links to the money/finance blogs.  This site looks like it could be interesting, but I think it could benefit from a running progress meter–similar to all the Net Worth blogs out there.

From my predictions, our household will have doubled in net worth over this year, due mostly in part to paying down our debt.  We’ve accrued a lot of liability due to our battle with infertility, maternity leave, and youthful indiscretion.  We are very susceptible to the make-more-spend-more mentality, so it takes daily conscious effort to live within our means. I feel like we are making very good progress, and will continue to do so.

I hope to check in on the We’re In Debt website to see how this couple progresses toward their goal of eliminating their ~$100,000 debt by July 2007–it is an ambitious goal.

Maybe we should have prizes…

Cool things to do with photos

I’ve been looking for a magnet-making kit for photos–we have a dearth of magnets on our fridge, mostly due to our philosophical aversion to purchasing cheesy tourist magnets. I like magnets for their pure functionality, but thought that it would be cool to have ones of all our friends so Grammy could look at and play with them.

Pixifun Photo Kits has magnet kits starting at $4.99–that includes the photo inlays, acrylic holders, CD and instructions.  Pixifun also has kits for CD labels, key rings, ID badges, and sticker albums.  I think Grammy would find the sticker albums fun also–she seems obsessed with stickers lately, and I think it would be funny to see her walking around with Lu Lu or Lydia’s face stuck to her forehead!  The sticker kit comes with 6 stickers, so at $4.99 a kit, that comes to about 8 cents a sticker.  Not too bad.  I think this could be an activity we could do with Graem–and you know we’re always looking for stuff to do with her to keep her out of trouble and to stop the incessant whining!  We could take photos of Bailey, Peanut and Murphy and turn them into stickers.
