So last weekend our ancient (Harvest Gold!) electric stove died. It was quite dramatic–we were baking cookies, when all of a sudden we saw flashes of light and smoke. Figuring armageddon was not occurring in our oven at that moment, I opened the oven to find the heating element melting and arcing against the bottom of the oven. We flailed our arms wildly and then turned off the oven. Toaster oven cookies would just have to do.
We went oven-shopping the following day, and ended up purchasing a stainless steel, glass cooktop electric range made by Whirlpool. We had considered switching to gas, but felt that the extra effort to plumb the gas line and the promise of a more easily-maintained cooktop trumped all.
Unfortunately, we are finding that the glass cooktop is the biggest pain in the arse. If you are at all considering joining the likes of Prince Charles and other cohorts of the Slow Food Movement, then this is the range for you. It takes about 15 minutes to boil water for tea, and took about 12 minutes to reheat some precooked sausages for Grammy and me this morning. I even called Whirlpool to ask if the frequent (every 2 seconds) cycling on and off of the heating element was normal. They said yes.
This is so not the stove for me, I expect instant heat and typically make stir fries. Perhaps if I were a stew girl (which I’m not–I am a constant crock pot peeker), this would be acceptable.
So as much of a pain as it is, I think we are going to take this one back and get a gas range.

We’re convinced that our angelic baby’s soul has been kidnapped by an evil banshee. This weekend, just in time for Alex and Dominic’s visit, Grammy has entered a new stage of screaming uncontrollably at about 120 dB in extremely shrill tones, especially in small, enclosed spaces. And she’s inconsolable–I’ve tried everything, from nursing to jellybeans. It’s driven me to tears, it hurts so much not to be able to do anything. We decided that it could be a) teething; b) she must have swallowed something that’s unable to pass; c) ear infection; d) demonic possession. The first three were ruled out by Tylenol, normal bowel movements, and lack of ear-pulling and fever, so it must clearly be d, and cherry-flavored Tylenol doesn’t seem to work. Grammy said “ball” tonight, while playing with her big purple ball. Her latest fave is to sit on the ball and bounce on it, with some assistance. She especially enjoys bouncing herself aimlessly while I stretch to catch her.
She seems to be saying “bop” a lot lately, and in reference to the dog or cats. I’m not quite sure what it means.
Graem is capable of following directions, but often chooses not to. At a recent study at the Cornell infant lab, Graem was asked to put the cat in the basket, to which she grabbed the cat even more firmly and grunted. During the followup study today, she held the cat and shook her head “no” when asked to put the cat in the basket. She was compliant with the book and shoe, which have fallen in rank of her favorite things.

I had written about a half-dozen more milestones in my last post, but Grammy managed to stomp on the keyboard in just the right key-combination as to delete my post. Luckily I had saved part of it, but I still lost some of my work. Now you all know why I hardly ever post these things…

Okay, so we’re 2 days late this month. We’ve done worse.
Speaking of doing worse… I haven’t kept up with updates on Grammy’s milestones. They happen so quickly these days, I forget to note them. So here’s the list, and forgive me if I’ve already posted some of them (I will forever be amazed by her accomplishments. That and I have mom-brain damage.) Read the rest of this entry »
