A Tale of Two Mamas

Trying to keep someone IN timeout

Archive for 2005

Almost done…

Only a few more minutes until our bathroom is officially done–except for the grout sealant and drying time! Then all I need to do is reinstall fixtures, and we may have a shower.

I checked back in my emails, and found that the official start time for this project was Friday, October 14th. It will finally be done tomorrow, Monday, December 19th, for a total project time of 2 months and 5 days! Embarrassing.

Fun in the snow!

Today we went sledding on Rice Hill in Taughannock Park. We used Graem’s kiddie boggan that Jen and Jen got Graem for Christmas. The hill was very steep and we weren’t quite sure that it would be alright for Grammy. So I had to try it out first! I used our snow saucer and it was a blast!! I’ve got to work on my steering because I almost ran over a couple of kids.

During one of my runs Graem went with me. She really didn’t know what to think and she looked somewhat scared towards the end. We video taped it and you could see the complete horror on her face! Then Margot went down the hill with her. Graem started liking it more and actually laughed and giggled! Of course what goes down — must come up! So the hike up was quite the pain. Here are some pictures of Graem’s first sled trip:

Graem and her sled

This is where we went sledding! Cayuga Lake in the background.

We think Graem’s best part of the day was when we left the hill to go back to the car. Margot ran with Graem’s sled and Graem laughed the whole way!

Our sledding experience today really made us appreciate the warmth that we have in our 60 degree house!

After sledding we went to the mall and watched “Rent” the movie. It was a pretty good movie, but we think that the play is much better. We were glad that was Grammy’s first movie because we love the music and always listened to the CD in the car when she was hanging out in Margot’s belly. Graem didn’t make it through the movie and ended up taking a nice 1 1/2 hour nap!

Today was a great day and Grammy enjoyed her two “firsts” - sledding and movies!

BTW, the tile guy came in today and he’s almost finished tiling the bathroom. All he has to do is come back tomorrow and put some goo on the tiles. Which means by Monday — we get to shower in our own bathroom!

Some words

I can’t remember which of Graem’s latest words we’ve posted, so I’m going to repost them now:

Baba: She’s been saying this one for a while now, and uses it to refer to almost anything she puts in her mouth–bottle, drink from a cup, boobie, and food. I think she calls Bailey and books “baba” too, so I’m not sure about that.

Poop: When she squats and strains, she whispers or mouths “poop,” so this might be a good indicator for early potty training.

Cat: Her latest word, she used it a lot yesterday when Shawna took Peanut to the vet. Poor guy has a bad urinary tract infection, so we’ve been pampering him with wet food, a quiet bed in the basement (away from Bailey and Graem), and doses of heavy-duty antibiotics. She’s also been calling Bailey “cat,” but I’m not sure how to convince her that Bailey isn’t a cat.

What’s That?: We think she’s been saying something that sounds like “what’s that.”

Graem’s been signing like mad lately–she signs “change” for a wet or poopy diaper, and has been signing “more” a lot. She’s been working on signing “milk” for when she wants to nurse too. I’m trying to get her to sign this to keep her from just lifting our shirts up to nurse–I want her to know that it’s not okay to do that, especially in public.

We haven’t taught her too many other signs–the sign for “pain” would require some presence of mind while she’s crying, “water” requires some dexterity, and she already says “mama.”

Our bathroom - the saga continues.

Many people have asked how the bathroom is coming along and so I’m going to give a general update. We have decided to call in the professionals to come and tile. When we tried the tub surround it wouldn’t fit in properly and so we just said enough is enough!

Who would have known for $1,500 someone would come out and do all of this work for us! Such a small price to pay for our mental health and well being.

So B&B flooring was suppose to come Monday, December 5th. Since then we had jacked it up so that we could take a bath — we were just missing walls. Which meant that we couldn’t splash or take a shower. I called to confirm their appointment and supposedly there was a mixup and they said that they hadn’t ordered materials so they would come out Monday, December 12th.

Well, they came out Monday, December 12th and he put up all of the backerboard in the bathroom. Then Tuesday, Wednesday, and today - the guy who has been working on the bathroom has been sick. They’ve promised me that they would have it complete by this coming Monday because I told them that’s when my Christmas guests would be coming in. So hopefully, by this time next week — this will all be a distant memory and for Christmas we will have a new bathroom! (I never thought it would excite me this much!)

Just an ordinary day

Today Grammy and I went to do some outreach for my new business Senior Solutions of Ithaca, LLC. We went to Lakeside Nursing home and met with the Marketing Director. Graem would have gone with Margot during this meeting - but Margot had a meeting for work too.

So, I walk into Lakeside with a bundled kid, bottle, and portfolio. Lucia is there to greet me and then we walk in her office to talk. Graem was absolutely perfect for about fifteen minutes. Then she wanted me to put her down so she could walk. She then started to pull up my shirt (as if to nurse). So, now I’m trying to talk to Lucia and I have my belly exposed. Quite the experience I must say!

Then we went to Walmart to get Grammy’s birthday decorations. We had to stop by Wegman’s too and see if they had anything better. When we were at Wegman’s Graem started crying because she wanted down. So I let her walk. Of course while she walks she likes to grab anything off the shelf that is her level and “rearrange”. So she’d pick up one can and put it in a different space. Then she’d grab another can and put it on the floor.

When we got home I was filling out Holiday cards and Bailey must have opened the bedroom door that I had everyone locked in. (I was in there too). The next sound I here is *splash*splash*. I look around the corner to find Graem laughing at her new invention. She’s thrown our cordless phone in the toilet and is now playing with the water.

Even on bad and crazy days like today — it still beats the best of work days! Of course, if you are trying to call us .. please let it ring for a while since we are down one phone!
